The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Peter Barry Lane (AFSN: 62662), United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 469th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action over North Vietnam on 1 October 1967. On that date, Captain Lane was the deputy mission commander of a force of twenty F-105’s assigned to attack Kep Airfield. When his aircraft was hit by antiaircraft fire prior to roll in, the continued on to the target and delivered his bombs precisely on the runway. Despite a rapid loss of fuel caused by battle damage to his airplane, Captain Lane was able to fly his crippled aircraft back to a tanker rendezvous and a safe recovery at a forward base. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Lane has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
