The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain George Edward Buchner (AFSN: FR-62539), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller and Pilot of an O-1 Bird Dog airplane of the 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron, DaNang Air Base, South Vietnam, in action over Southeast Asia on 21 February 1967. On that date, Captain Buchner successfully coordinated a medical evacuation with friendly foreign forces on the ground, overcoming hostile gun positions, and language problems in the process. His actions resulted in saving lives of wounded soldiers, and permitted troops in the area to consolidate their defensive perimeter for the evening. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Buchner reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
