The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain George Edward Buchner (AFSN: FR-62539), United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force as a Forward Air Controller and Pilot of an O-1 airplane of the 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron, DaNang Air Base, South Vietnam, directing fighter aircraft in Southeast Asia on 22 May 1967. On that date, Captain Buchner, flying in support of Republic of Korea Marine Forces in Quang Ngai Province, Republic of Vietnam, remained airborne for more than eight hours in his unarmed O-1 Bird Dog aircraft directing medical evacuation helicopters as they airlifted wounded soldiers from the battle zone. Despite intense hostile groundfire, Captain Buchner remained in the target area and was instrumental in the successful accomplishment of the widely varied mission. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Buchner has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Colonel George Edward Buchner (AFSN: FR-62539), United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service to the United States as Chief, Materiel and Operations Manpower Requirements Branch and as Chief, Management Engineering and Requirements Division, Directorate of Manpower and Organization, Deputy Chief of Staff, Programs and Resources, Headquarters United States Air Force, from 29 December 1973 to 21 May 1976. In these important assignments, the leadership, exemplary foresight, and ceaseless efforts consistently demonstrated by Colonel Buchner resulted in significant contributions to the effectiveness and success of the Manpower Program. The superior initiative, outstanding leadership, and personal endeavor displayed by Colonel Buchner reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
