The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Airman John R. Hawk, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life near Destin, Florida, on 24 April 1971. On that date, while relaxing on the b each adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico, Airman Hawk detected two imperiled bathers. With complete disregard for his own safety, and despite the hazards of the breaking surf and strong undertow, Airman Hawk unhesitatingly entered the turbulent water and assisted one of the swimmers to safety. In an attempt to save the remaining bather, Airman Hawk again entered the treacherous water and persevered in his humanitarian rescue efforts until the arrival of professional rescue teams. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Airman Hawk reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
