The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Sergeant Homer Miguel Garza (ASN: RA-18355870), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Sergeant Garza distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 11 December 1968, while serving as First Sergeant of Battery C, 3d Battalion, 34th Artillery Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, during an enemy mortar attack on Fire Support Base CLAW II in Kien Hoa Province. As soon as the mortar rounds started to strike within the base camp perimeter, Sergeant Garza courageously rushed through the barrage to the center of the impact area and made a crater analysis, which pinpointed the azimuth from which the rounds were coming. When a mortar round ignited the ammunition in one of the howitzer sections, he ran more than 100 meters through the fusillade to obtain a fire extinguisher and returned to put out the fire. His actions during the attack were an invaluable asset in returning accurate fire on the enemy, thus preventing large scale friendly casualties. First Sergeant Garza’s extraordinary heroism in close combat with an armed hostile force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
