The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Paul Frederick Little (ASN: 52770901), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Little distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 19 June 1969 while serving as a Squad Leader with Company C, 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, on a reconnaissance in force mission in Dinh Tuong Province. After his unit had sustained casualties while traveling through a heavily mined area, Specialist Little courageously rushed forward across the hazardous terrain to reach and administer aid to his wounded comrades. After treating the wounded men, he carried one of them through the area to an evacuation site and immediately started to return for another. As he moved back toward the location of the casualties, he was mortally wounded by the detonation of an enemy explosive trap. Specialist Little’s extraordinary heroism in close combat with an armed hostile force was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
