After enlisting in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1945, John Davis graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1950 and was commissioned in the Marine Corps. He retired as a U.S. Marine Corps General after serving from July 1, 1983 to May 31, 1986 as the 20th Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps.
