The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Quartermaster Corps) Kenneth Edward Cluck, Jr., United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with while a member of Headquarters and Light Company, 705th Maintenance Battalion. Captain Cluck distinguished himself by heroism above and beyond the call of duty on 17 July 1981 at Fort Polk, Louisiana. While en route to north Fort Polk on a routine mission, Captain Cluck stopped to assist a woman and her children in distress. As he began assisting them, a man got out of a parked car, drew a handgun, and fired on Captain Cluck and the woman from close range. Captain Cluck immediately attempted to get the weapon. He also placed himself between the assailant and the car, allowing another child to escape. Captain Cluck further brought risk to himself as he tried to prevent the assailant’s escape. Captain Cluck’s courageous actions were in the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit on himself and the United States Army.
