On April 4, 1968, Lieutenant Lawrence Kocher of Company B, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment led his platoon on a combat operation near the village of Then Thien Tra, when it came under heavy enemy fire. Jerry Shain was one of 9 men, including the Lieutenant, who received posthumous Silver Stars for his heroic actions in the battle that marked one of the deadliest, and most heroic, single-day actions for the Regiment in Vietnam.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Jerry Wayne Shain, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity In action against the enemy. Sergeant Shain distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3d Brigade, 82d Airborne Division, while on a combat operation near the village of Then Thien Tra, Republic of Vietnam, on 4 April 1968. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
