(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Joseph J. Cassidy, Jr. (ASN: 13893615), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity In action against the enemy. Sergeant Cassidy distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3d Brigade, 82d Airborne Division, in the Republic of Vietnam on 11 March 1968. Sergeant Cassidy, although painfully wounded during an assault on Phan Rang, maintained his position and killed five of the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
