Second Lieutenant Adams distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as a Platoon Leader with Company C, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3d Brigade, 82d Airborne Division, in action against the enemy near Hue, Republic of Vietnam, on 20 March 1968. On that date Company A came under heavy NVA fire from automatic weapons on the other side of a canal, which inflicted heavy casualties on Second Lieutenant Adams’ platoon. Second Lieutenant James ran into an open area to aid a wounded soldier, and was mortally wounded. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
