The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Michael Hugh Lamb (ASN: US-55875844), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Company B, 3d Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Lamb distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 10 April 1967, when his platoon was surrounded by a numerically superior enemy force. At the outset of the attack, Specialist Lamb was wounded by an enemy rifle grenade. He disregarded the intense pain of his wounds and continued to return fire upon the enemy and to maintain his position in the defensive perimeter. Upon learning that the crew of a machine gun near him had been knocked out, Specialist Lamb began to race toward the friendly bunker, firing furiously as he went. Before he reached the automatic weapon, however, he was mortally wounded. Specialist Fourth Class Lamb’s extraordinary heroism in close combat against a numerically superior force was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
