Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 2283 (April 9, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Vincent P. Landon (ASN: US-54966736), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Landon distinguished himself on the morning of 2 February 1968, while serving as a Rifleman with Company B, 2d Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, on a reconnaissance in force mission in the village of Ben Tre. Entering the town, Private Landon’s unit came under heavy rocket, Mortar, automatic and semi-automatic weapons fire from Viet Cong emplacements in houses and bunkers. With complete disregard for his own safety, Private Landon braved intense fire from within one house to enter it and rout the insurgents. Although wounded, Private Landon against charged a fortified position and put the enemy to flight. While contributing to the overwhelming defeat of the enemy force, Private Landon was mortally wounded. Private First Class Landon’s extraordinary heroism in close combat against a Viet Cong force was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
