The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant John A. Smith (ASN: RA-34177852), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 25th Signal Company, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 29 September 1950, when the leading vehicles of the company convoy struck an enemy mine field near Hamyang, Korea, and a large enemy force fired at the vehicles from concealed positions in the surrounding hills, Sergeant Smith immediately reconnoitered the area, organized the personnel and led them to attack the enemy. By his exemplary courage and determination, he inspired the group to repulse the enemy, thereby eliminating the road block and enabling the convoy to proceed to its destination. Sergeant Smith’s courage and inspired leadership is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
