The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Charlie Neace, Jr. (ASN: RA-15379569), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 31 August 1950, the patrol with which Private Neace was serving near Haman, Korea, had penetrated deep into enemy territory where it was subjected to heavy small arms and machine gun fire. Withdrawing from a slope into the cover of a valley, the patrol was pinned down by a withering crossfire. Private Neace discovered that one man had been wounded and was unable to withdraw. Crawling forward a hundred yards, through the mud of rice paddies, under the hail of enemy fire, he reached the man. Because of he intensity of hostile action, he was unable to remove the man. When further assistance arrived, he stayed in place to cover the movement of the party. Firing his rifle with such effect that enemy action was halted long enough to permit his comrade to move safely, he was last seen maintaining his position. Private Nease’s gallant devotion to his fellow soldiers is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
