The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Roland `V. Sternini (ASN: RA-13277506), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 65th Engineer Combat Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 20 September 1950, near Haman, Korea, when the company was attacked by numerically superior; hostile forces, Private First Class Sternini observed that a machine gunner had been wounded. Dashing across the fire-swept knoll, he arrived at the machine gun position to find the weapon out of action and the assistant gunner attempting to evacuate his comrade. He immediately engaged the enemy with withering fire to cover he removal of the casualty, and held the position until he was seriously wounded by an enemy hand grenade. Private First Class Sternini’s conspicuous bravery, soldierly ability and outstanding devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
