The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal Harold C. Cline (ASN: 357022220), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 771st Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action on 18 May 1945, in Germany. While swimming in the Regan River near Reding, Germany, he saw another soldier in a whirlpool in immediate danger from drowning. When Corporal Cline reached him, the terrorized man pulled him under the water with him. With extraordinary presence of mind and admirable dexterity, Corporal Cline broke free and succeeded in getting a grasp on the man to hold his head above the water. He then drew the man to the bank to safety. His heroic service is in accordance with the highest traditions of the military service.
