Headquarters, XII Corps, General Orders No. 44 (June 3, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal Lloyd G. Vail` (ASN: 20424840), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 276th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy 25 April 1945, in Germany. When an M-7 howitzer carriage caught fire, Corporal Vail, without regard for his own safety nor the danger from burning ammunition, threw ammunition from the rear deck of the M-7 and aided in extinguishing the fire. By his actions, he helped in saving a piece of valuable military equipment and eliminated a great source of danger to other troops. In so doing he displayed courage and devotion to duty consistent with the best traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
