The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) John B. Carson` (ASN: 0-168597), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 731st Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 17 April 1945 in Germany. At about 1700 on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the high traditions of the military service. Date Lieutenant Carson’s attention was attracted to an ammunition trailer of the 180th Field Artillery Battalion which had caught fire while proceeding through Newufang, Germany. The vehicle being stopped, Lieutenant Carson caught up two fire extinguishers and ran to the trailer. He warned all enlisted men to retreat to a safe position and then directed, and assisted in the uncoupling of the trailer and extinguished the blaze. He then directed the trailer’s removal to the edge of a nearby pond. Sending the enlisted men to safety, he removed the overheated 155-mm. projectiles and powder; thus forestalling the danger of the projectiles detonating near the troops’ quarters in the nearby vicinity. The courage and utter disregard for personal safety displayed by Lieutenant Carson reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
