The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Horace W. Ziglar (ASN: 0-1167711), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Battery, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 27 – 28 March 1945, in Germany. As Battery Commander, he was charged with the responsibility of establishing wire communicants from the Corps Artillery Fiore Direction Center to six other installations, all in the suburbs of Frankfurt-en-Main, Germany, at a time when the major portion of the city was in enemy hands. He personally reconnoitered the wire routs through streets and areas infested with snipers, and in which artillery and small arms fire was being received. He then personally accompanied his wire sections and assisted them in the most dangerous areas in order to encourage and support his men. The lines were repeatedly out and the Command Post was struck on three separate occasions by artillery fire. Numerous rounds struck near Captain Ziglar, some within 15 yards. In order to maintain this vital wire net, he worked continuously for 30 hours without rest, 18 hours of which were under constant artillery and small arms fire. By his indomitable courage and gallant leadership, he inspired supreme devotion in his men and successfully accomplished a highly dangerous mission. His gallantry reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
