The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Leodegario Polanco (ASN: 32865784), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the *** Engineer Combat Battalion, XII Corps, in action on 12 February 1945, in Luxembourg. On this date, Private First Class Polanco was one of the crew of ten operating an Infantry assault raft on the Sauer River when due to the swift current, the raft was torn apart. Private First Class Polanco and four others were carried downstream on a piece of wreckage. Two of the men were caught. Private First Class Polanco, through his dauntless courage, was able to free both of the men enabling them to reach shore safely. Private First Class Polanco’s heroic accomplishment were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
