The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Charles R. Hutchinson (ASN: 0-1823602), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Tank Destroyer Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 21 December 1944, in Luxembourg. Under an intense mortar and artillery barrage, Lieutenant Hutchinson made a personal check of communication lines to a tank destroyer’s position that had been broken during a previous barrage. While there the tank destroyer received a direct hit by enemy mortar fire killing the gun commander and seriously wounding the platoon leader. He then returned with his two remaining crewmen and scorning personal danger stood in the turret of the armored car and manned a machine gun protecting his two crewmen from the enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire while they made the repairs. The outstanding courage, bravery, and loyal devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Hutchinson are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
