Headquarters, XVI Corps, General Orders No. 38 (June 1, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Coast Artillery Corps) James F. Flynn (ASN: 0-1044220), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 131st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion, in action on 24 March 1945, in Germany. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Captain Flynn assisted in the rescue of the members of a crew from a flaming aircraft which had crashed in the midst of a TNT dump. During this entire period flames were rapidly consuming the wreckage of the plane and the aircraft’s ammunition supply consisting of .50 caliber and 75-mm. shells was exploding. Seconds after he effected this daring rescue, 75 tons of TNT exploded causing the complete disintegration of the wrecked plane and creating a crater two hundred feet in length, sixty feet in width and thirty feet in depth. The courage and high regard for his comrades displayed by Captain Flynn reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Military Service.
