The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Air Corps) Jack Pebworth (ASN: 0-724815), United States Army Air Forces, for heroism while participating in aerial flight while serving with the 73d Bombardment Squadron, 28th Bombardment Group, on 16 October 1942. Lieutenant Pebworth was in a position of responsibility and command in a flight of six B-26 airplanes that intercepted two Japanese destroyers 50 miles northeast of Kiska Harbor. During the deck-level bombing attacks which were delivered in the face of strong and accurate anti-aircraft fire, his plane received a direct burst of anti-aircraft fire and was las seen to plunge into the sea. He is listed as missing in actin. Both destroyers were sunk during this engagement. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army Air Forces.
