The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Lyndall W. Steeley (ASN: 19047338), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States. While serving with Company D, 176th Engineer Combat Battalion, in attempting to rescue an enlisted man from drowning in the dangerous water of the Kuskokwiz River, in Alaska, on 7 August 1942. The water at this point was very deep and swift, full of cross currents and eddies, as well as extremely cold. This act of bravery and courage reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
