The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Thomas Gray (ASN: 20740412), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Company A, 153d Infantry Regiment, in Alaska, on 11 August 1942. Knowing a fellow soldier was trapped by flames and fallen debris and overcome by smoke in a burning building, Private Gray, realizing the predicament and with utter disregard for his own safety, entered the building. He forced his way through the flames and fallen debris to rescue the unconscious soldier. The heroism displayed by Private Gray on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
