The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Robert J. Meikle (ASN: 20904824), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Company L, 37th Infantry Regiment, in effecting the rescue of a civilian from drowning in Unalaska Bay, Alaska, on 31 June 1942. A civilian was struck by a moving sling and knocked from the deck of a ship into the water, suffering two broken legs. A running tied carried him under the Unalaska dock. Seeing t he accident, Private First Class Meikle, with utter disregard of his own personal safety, jumped into the water, swam under the dock and prevented the man from drowning. A rope was thrown to Private Meikle who tied it around the injured man and both were hauled to safety. This reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
