The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major (Air Corps) Philip T. Durfee, United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight. Major Durfee demonstrated superior qualities of leadership and loyalty in flying assigned missions to facilitate the urgent movement of supplies and personnel during the period 1 June 1942 to 16 July 1942. By personally leading flights he was able to inspire his subordinates with his intrepidity in the face of hazardous weather. His superior sense of duty and disregard of his personal safety and normal prerogatives is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Army Air Forces.
