The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Lester Manly Chancellor (ASN: 0-822129), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while acting in the capacity of pilot, in his first conflict with an armed enemy in the Aleutian Area, 4 June 1942. Operating in fog and with an extremely low ceiling, Lieutenant Chancellor downed an enemy plane, a German Stuka type dive bomber, one of a group of Japanese Zero Fighters and German type Dive Bombers. His outstanding initiative and resourcefulness in attacking and successfully downing an enemy plane, which was endangering the lives of the other pilots of his flight reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
