The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Dwight L. Hoffman, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the 9th Aviation Battalion, 9th Infantry Division in the Republic of Vietnam on 24 April 1969. Warrant Officer Hoffman distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 24 April 1969 while serving as a Pilot with the 9th Aviation Battalion, on a night hunter operation in Diao Duc District. Following the marking of four enemy sampans by a lead gunship, Warrant Officer Hoffman put his craft into position to destroy them. Immediately following his attack, his ship came under counter-attack from enemy machine gun fire. Warrant Officer Hoffman directed his fire at the origin of the tracer rounds he sighted and, in doing so, began to receive fire from two previously unsighted sampans. He quickly dove and destroyed them. His courage and quick thinking led to a successful completion of the mission. Warrant Officer Hoffman’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division and the United States Army.
