The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Marcus H. Coody, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a UH-1H helicopter near An Loc, Republic of Vietnam on 31 May 1972. On this date, Major Coody was flying a combat assault mission to insert friendly forces into the besieged city of An Loc. Although encountering intense ground fire that shot down both helicopter gunships, Major Coody’s flight of four troop-carrying helicopters continued their combat assaults throughout the day. His professional advice and leadership contributed to the success of this highly intricate and hazardous mission. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Coody reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
