The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Albert J. Kramer (ASN: 0-1173682), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight over Luzon, Philippine Islands, from 4 February to 30 June 1945. Assigned to the 150th Field Artillery Battalion as an artillery liaison pilot, Lieutenant Kramer made daily observation slights over enemy-held territory to obtain vital intelligence information. Although subjected to heavy enemy anti-aircraft fire, he engaged in numerous combat flights over battle areas and behind enemy lines at Zig Zag Pass, Bataan, and the Ipo and Wawa Dams in Luzon, and often voluntarily landed in Japanese-held territory to secure military intelligence reports from guerrilla leaders. On one occasion, he remained over an enemy battery which had long been a serious menace to aerial activities and, although his aircraft was hit by shell fragments, accurately directed artillery fire which silenced the battery. When the enemy inflicted heavy casualties on infantry troops from a concealed gun position, he fearlessly made low runs to obtain oblique photographs which revealed the large gun emplacement, thus enabling our forces to neutralize the position. By his outstanding courage and superior airmanship, Lieutenant Kramer made a noteworthy contribution to the successes achieved by the 150th Field Artillery Battalion.
