The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Sergeant Dennis H. Moss, United States Army, for gallantry in action involving close combat with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Moss distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions from 3 May 1969 to 23 May 1969 while serving as a Sniper with 6th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, on various combat missions in Dinh Tuong Province. During the period cited, Sergeant Moss repeatedly displayed complete disregard for his own safety as he engaged numerically superior enemy elements with devastatingly accurate fire at ranges up to 600 meters. On one occasion, when the intensity of the hostile barrage forced the friendly unit to take cover, Sergeant Moss courageously remained in an exposed position to return fire with such murderous effect that the enemy was soon routed. His valiant activities and expert marksmanship contributed greatly to the success of his unit’s mission on many other occasions. Sergeant Moss’ personal bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

His courageous activities and expert marksmanship contributed greatly to the success of his unit’s mission of securing the area around Dong Tam Base. Sergeant Moss’ personal bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
