The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Glen Everett Rountree (ASN: 15611142), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery A, 3d Battalion, 319th Artillery Regiment, 173d Airborne Brigade, in action on 29 December 1968, while returning in a quarter-ton vehicle from Qui Nhon with Private Netter and Private Leroy William Brown. On Highway #1, south of Fire Support Base Ollie, their vehicle was ambushed by an enemy force. Private Brown was killed and Sergeant Rountree seriously wounded with the first volley of fire received from enemy automatic weapons and small arms positioned on both sides of the road. Private Netter could not start the vehicle after the engine died. Sergeant Rountree refused help and told Private Netter to run for help to a nearby Army Vietnamese outpost while he stayed with the vehicle and engaged the enemy. Without regard to his own personal safety and even though wounded in both legs and his pelvis, Sergeant Rountree fired the M-60 machine gun mounted on the jeep until there was no more ammunition. Still receiving enemy fire, he then fired his M-16 while attempting to contact his element, Battery A, 3d Battalion, 319th Artillery, for help on the radio present in the jeep. He continued to valorously fire until a rescue force arrived and he was evacuated. Sergeant Rountree’s extraordinary heroism was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
