The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Senior Airman Kenneth Arnold Olp, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at the scene of the B-52 aircraft engine fire at Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota, on 15 September 1980. Airman Olp rushed to the flame engulfed wing of the B-52 aircraft with complete disregard for his own safety, and despite the hazards of intense heat, burning fuel and close proximity to the burning engines, Airman Olp unhesitatingly aided in containing the fire during a critical ten minute period in which all available fire trucks were either in transit or being re-serviced. His selfless efforts in containing the fire were instrumental in saving an irreplaceable Air Force resource. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Airman Olp reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
