The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Thomas F. Quinlan (ASN: 0-2319273), United States Army, for gallantry in action in combat against a Vietcong Force while serving with the 3d Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, on 1 February 1968 in the city of My Tho in Dinh Tuong Province, Republic of Vietnam. Captain Quinlan was temporarily in command of Delta Company during a beach assault and subsequent combat operation in the streets of My Tho to eliminate elements of three Viet Cong battalions. After beaching, Captain Quinlan placed his company in a wedge formation and attacked in coordination with Company B on his left and Company A on his right. Upon reaching the first street inland from the beaching site, his company came under intense AK-47 and machine gun fire. His soldiers had never experienced the problems of street fighting and hesitated in their attack. His second platoon had closed toward Company B, thus causing a gap in his wedge formation. The second platoon’s company radio was not working properly and Captain Quinlan’s instructions were not understood.
