Headquarters, Americal Division, General Orders No. 2867 (April 21, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Francis Warren Cody (ASN: US-56934543), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Cody distinguished himself by intrepid actions on 25 February 1969 while serving as a Medical Aidman with Troop B, 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, Americal Division. On that date, during an assault of a heavily defended enemy position, near the village of Phu Loc, the insurgents opened fire with automatic weapons on the unit’s right flank. As several individuals dismounted their vehicles to attack the enemy position, one man was critically wounded. Immediately recognizing the individual’s need for medical attention, Specialist Cody, in the face of enemy fire and without regard for his own personal safety, raced to the aid of his fallen comrade. As he reached the injured man and prepared to administer aid, Specialist Cody was struck and mortally wounded by enemy fire. Specialist Fourth Class Cody’s personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the Americal Division, and the United States Army.
