The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Walter E. Borden (ASN: 32864196), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 23 November 1944, in *****. An enemy patrol, estimated to consist of ten men armed with automatic weapons, launched a determined attack against the four-man outpost commanded by Private Borden. Three of the sentries, including Private Borden, were seriously wounded. Private Borden ordered the only member of the outpost not wounded to go back for reinforcements while he covered his movement by fire. In spite of his wounds which later resulted in his death, Private Borden alone drove off the numerically superior enemy force. When his platoon leader arrived at the scene, he found two automatic weapons covered with blood which the enemy had abandoned in fleeing from Private Borden’s determined resistance. Private Borden’s gallantry and utter disregard for personal safety reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
