(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Air Corps) Theodore B. Swanson (ASN: 0-396331), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a Bomber in the FIFTH Air Force, in aerial operations in the Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations, in 1942 and 1943. When his airplane suffered damage and a fire broke out during a bombing raid on Borneo, Captain Swanson stayed at the controls after ordering five enlisted men to bail out. Two officers who remained with the pilot quelled the fire and Captain Swanson made a successful emergency crash landing on a small island. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Swanson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
