The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal Senkichi Shiroma (ASN: 30101691), United States Army, for heroism not in action on the night of ** October 1943, in the vicinity of *** Italy. While crossing the *** River, Private Isamu Watanabe and Corporal Zenkichi Shiroma saw an ammunition carrier, who was carrying a full load of 81-mm. ammunition, step into deep water and be carried downstream by the swift current. Because of his heavy load and the swift and treacherous current he was helpless to aid himself. Hearing his cries for help and seeing him go under the water, Private Watanabe and Corporal Shiroma immediately, with no thought for their own personal safety, dived into the water, swam downstream and with great difficulty dragged their comrade to safety on the opposite bank where they administered first-aid. Private Watanabe’s and Corporal Shiroma’s quick action and courage in saving the life of a comrade was exemplary and a credit to the Armed Forces of the United States.
