The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Torao Nitta (ASN: 30104215), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with the enemy while serving with Battery C, 522d Field Artillery Battalion, 442d Regimental Combat Team, in Germany on 18 June 1945. When a German girl fell from a bridge into the Danube River, Private First Class Nitta unhesitatingly dived into the water and swam to her aid. After keeping himself and the other afloat for several minutes, Private First Class Nitta was brought ashore by three comrades. His courageous actions contributed to saving the girl’s life and brought high credit upon himself and the Army.
