Headquarters, Mediterranean Theater of Operations, General Orders No. 157 (December 30, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Captain (Chaplain) Israel A. S. Yost (ASN: 0-511005), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States with the100th Infantry Battalion, 442d Infantry Regiment, in Italy from 15 October 1943 to 8 September 1944. During the last crossing of the Volturno River and in the action near Pozzili, Chaplain Yost worked untiringly and over areas known to be mined in recovering bodies for burial. Throughout all the engagements in which his battalion participated during operations in Italy, he continually gave spiritual guidance to the men, holding divine services whenever feasible, despite severe climatic conditions and the hazards involved. Though wounded twice by shell fire in carrying out his duties, he was in no way deterred from his attempts to relieve both physical and spiritual suffering of friend or foe. On several occasions, he acted as litter bearer, aidman, and supply man with utter disregard for his personal safety. By his untiring efforts, determination and unselfish devotion to duty, Chaplain Yost was instrumental in maintaining the morale of the men, and won for him the respect and admiration of every member of the Battalion. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Chaplain Yost and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
