The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Jacob R. Cox (ASN: 39450117), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 302d Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany on 2 February 1945. When fire from enemy machine guns in concealed positions slowed his platoon’s advance, Sergeant Cox fearlessly dashed forward and engaged the enemy. Boldly charging across an anti-tank ditch he captured an enemy machine gun nest, killed one German, wounded another and took three prisoners. Inspired by their leader’s valiant courage, his men attacked with such ferocity that the area was cleared of all enemy. Sergeant Cox’s conspicuous bravery, gallantry and supreme devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military service.
