Headquarters, SIXTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 19 (March 27, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Fred Y. Sugiura (ASN: 30102841), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 442d Regimental Combat Team, in action against the enemy on 29 October 1944 in the vicinity of La Houssiere, France. While leading his platoon in a bayonet charge against enemy hill positions, Sergeant Sugiura rushed a machine gun emplacement, killed three of the gunners, and captured another who was launching hand grenades. In the fire fight and hand-to-hand engagement which followed there was momentary confusion and disorder but Sergeant Sugiura quickly rallied his men for the final assault and routed the enemy from the hill. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
