The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Technician Fifth Grade Gordon W. Johnson (ASN: 35722626), United States Army, for heroic achievement in action on 28 April 1945, in Italy. While on a special task force Technician Fifth Grade Johnson and twelve companions were well out in front of friendly elements when they came under fire from an enemy road-block. After suffering several casualties, the men took up a defensive position in two buildings. Although assaulted by a force of 150 enemy, the small group held their ground for three hours. The enemy, seeing that his assaults were proving costly and unsuccessful, brought up an artillery piece to a point within 20 yards of both buildings and began blasting away. Only when they realized that their fight was hopeless did the task force surrender. The devotion to duty and courage of Technician Fifth Grade Johnson in this gallant battle reflect highly upon himself and the military service.
