The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Norman S. Petit (ASN: US-51559187), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy. Sergeant Petit distinguished himself by heroic actions on 11 December 1966 in the Republic of Vietnam. On that date, Sergeant Petit was leading his squad on a search and destroy operation. At approximately 1430 hours, an armored personnel carrier to his front struck an enemy antitank mine and simultaneously burst into flames, causing several casualties. Without hesitation, Sergeant Petit left the security of his own track and rushed to the flaming vehicle, immediately beginning to evacuate the wounded personnel to a secure area. Although the intense heat was causing the ammunition inside the vehicle to explode, Sergeant Petit, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, repeatedly returned to the flaming vehicle until he had finally evacuated all of the wounded personnel. Due to Sergeant Petit’s personal courage and timely reactions, all the wounded personnel were quickly evacuated from the flaming vehicle, thus preventing the possibility of any further injuries. His actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
