Headquarters, XX Corps, General Orders No. 14 (January 19, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Julius G. Benke (ASN: 36583119), United States Army, for heroism in France on 23 August 1944, not involving actual conflict with the enemy. Private First Class Benke’s squadron was halted on the banks of the Yonne River near Barbey during a short organizational rest period. Members of the unit were swimming in the river when one of the men, far out in deep water, was suddenly stricken with cramps. Private First Class Benke, seeing the floundering soldier rapidly succumbing in midstream, swam fearlessly to his rescue. Grappling with the frenzied man, he succeeded in overcoming his struggles and brought him safely to shore. Private First Class Benke’s unhesitating and determined action saved his comrade’s life. His aggressiveness, courage and devotion to duty are worthy of great praise.
