The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Airman First Class Taylor L. Sims, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Falcon Pointe Apartment Complex, 1911 Louise Lane, Colorado Springs, Colorado, on 10 March 2001. On that date, at 0130, Airman Sims discovered a fire on the second floor of the building. Responding quickly, she rushed to another resident’s apartment and instructed them to call 911. Airman Sims then proceeded to the second floor apartment where the blaze started and evacuated an unaware family of four and their dog. After ensuring the family was safe, Airman Sims then ran to the third floor apartment above the fire. Due to quickly spreading flames, she had to crawl to the door to wake the sleeping residents and eventually help them out a balcony window. After assisting the two most threatened apartments, Airman Sims continued to run through the smoke-filled building and knocked on the neighboring doors to alert other residents of the danger. While she was assisting an elderly resident, a small gas tank exploded in a second floor apartment that had already been evacuated spraying glass everywhere. Airman Sims’ quick response ensured that all twenty families were evacuated safely and the fire department was there in time to minimize the damage to the building. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Airman Sims reflect great credit upon herself and the United States Air Force.
