The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Timothy L. Weuthrich, United States Army, for gallantry in action. Specialist Fourth Class Weuthrich distinguished himself by heroic actions on 31 August 1970, while serving with Company B, 3d Battalion, 22d Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. On the date cited above, Company B was involved in a reconnaissance operation when they came under intense small arms, automatic weapons, and rocket propelled grenade fire from a large enemy force that was well-entrenched in a bunker complex. During the initial contact, two friendly Soldiers were fatally wounded and a platoon leader was seriously wounded. With complete disregard for his own safety, Specialist Weuthrich exposed himself to an intense barrage of fire as he moved twenty meters forward of the rest of his unit and began placing suppressive fire on the enemy position. Despite being wounded, Specialist Weuthrich continued to provide covering fire, thus allowing a medical aidman to administer first aid to the wounded platoon leader and remove him to a safe position. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. The bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
