The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Donald C. Bratton, United States Army, for heroism in connection with military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam on 15 July 1969 while assigned to Company B, 5th Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 199th Light Infantry Brigade. On that date, Lieutenant Bratton was leading his platoon on a reconnaissance in force operation when his unit came under intense automatic weapons fire from two sides. Responding to orders from the company commander, he maneuvered his element approximately 330 meters in an effort to surround one of the enemy forces. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Lieutenant Bratton charged the enemy position as he discharged an accurate base of small arms fire. His aggressive actions in the face of such grave danger caused the enemy to flee and allowed time for his company to re-group and maneuver toward the other enemy unit. First Lieutenant Bratton’s valorous actions and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 199th Light Infantry Brigade, and the United States Army.
